Hatha Yoga is the practice of transforming your body and mind through movement as well as isometric or static postures. These classes incorporate breathwork and help to cultivate a steadiness of intention as well as strength and flexibility. Most modern yoga classes are a form of Hatha Yoga derived from a diverse lineage from Iyengar to modern masters.
Vinyasa is the art of asana in mindful motion. Often thought of being “fast”, this is not always the case. These classes are mindfully sequenced and linked postures that incorporate strong breathwork. They help to cultivate flexibility, endurance, and the ability to “go with the flow”. Most Vinyasa classes are out of the Astanga lineage but are heavily influenced by other instructors.
Viniyoga is an ancient Sanskrit term that implies differentiation, adaptation, and appropriate application. Viniyoga refers to an approach to yoga that adapts the various means and methods of practice to the unique condition, needs and interests of each individual – giving each practitioner the tools to individualize and actualize the process of self discovery and personal transformation.
For example, if students are feeling sluggish, the teacher may lead a more energetic practice – whereas if students are exhausted, scattered or have injuries, a very different practice will be lead. Specific breathing techniques will also be used throughout the practice to support the intended needs of the students that day, and the practice will be concluded with an equally appropriate pranayama and meditation, all consistent with the original intention to bring balance and to ease suffering. Each student is unique and each day is unique for each student – therefore each practice is unique. Viniyoga teachers are trained to take all of this into consideration in the preparation of each and every class practice.

This class will always include pranayama (breath work) as well as a balance of stretching and strengthening postures. This is a slow-moving practice with gradual transitions and some postures being held a minute or more. Yoga philosophy will be interjected where appropriate.
