According to the Viniyoga Institute:

"Viniyoga is an ancient Sanskrit term that implies differentiation, adaptation, and appropriate application. Viniyoga refers to an approach to yoga that adapts the various means and methods of practice to the unique condition, needs and interests of each individual - giving each practitioner the tools to individualize and actualize the process of self discovery and personal transformation".

For example, if students are feeling sluggish, the teacher may lead a more energetic practice - whereas if students are exhausted, scattered or have injuries, a very different practice will be lead. Specific breathing techniques will also be used throughout the practice to support the intended needs of the students that day, and the practice will be concluded with an equally appropriate pranayama and meditation, all consistent with the original intention to bring balance and to ease suffering. Each student is unique and each day is unique for each student - therefore each practice is unique. Viniyoga teachers are trained to take all of this into consideration in the preparation of each and every class practice.
